I'm giving this 3 stars because the end became so bogged down in words that I became very frustrated. The beginning books were very good and they were gospels that I had heard about but never read.The most interesting books IMO were on Jesus' infancy and childhood. I have read several times that Jesus was born, Joseph and Mary took him to Egypt to escape Herod's murder of the children of Bethlehem but no one recorded anything else. This gospel was fascinating and surprisingly well written. I cannot testify to the truth of it, however, I do believe that Jesus didn't just start healing and performing miracles when he started his ministry.
The books that mirror the commandments just pulled me down with their florid use of extra words and explanations. I didn't enjoy or get any thing out of them other than the seemed to mirror the Ten Commandments with changes (yes, I know the commandments are in the Old Testament).
I would say this is worth reading just to know what all the talk is about. The title "Forbidden" just seems to be a hook to make you think you're reading something racy or explicit, not so.

The divisions among earth's people in their on going search for the truth in matters of religious beliefs , as well as the curiosity when "forbidden" is part of the title to a writing, makes this book attractive. Having read most of it, I found it quite interesting and can see where one's belief depends upon one's own faith in what , so far, is the final version of the scriptures and the teachings of the gospels... Because there is among believers "some" doubt as to truth, however slight, a book such as this beckons them.
This is an interesting read for anyone whose quest is to read the entire bible. I'm an Old Testament fan but find the New incredibly difficult to read. This will be a controversial read and would be sure to liven up any book club, especially a church based one. It was free on .
This is a tedious treatise and is mostly a verbatim reproduction of a translation of the original documents. I finally got tired of it and deleted the book after reading about 20%.
Scholars should read this with a touch of "good" Biblical knowledge. there are a lot of traps built into this book. no other book references mentioned either.
This is a collection of early Christian apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, such as the "Acts of Paul and Thecla," the "Protevangelion of James," and the like, also including the "Apostolic Fathers," namely the letters of Clement of Rome (c. 96 CE), Ignatius of Antioch (d. 113 CE), and Polcarp of Smyrna (c. 113 CE for his letter; d. circa 150 CE). These texts, written for the most part in the ante-Nicene period, are of tremendous importance for the understanding of the development of the Christian movement and its theology, ethics, practice, and relationship with the surrounding society. I recommend to all my students that they familiarize themselves with this literature.
However, these texts were NEVER part of the "original" New Testament, if such a thing could even be said to have existed prior to the 4th c. CE. They were never "forbidden," either. The letters of Polycarp, Clement, and Ignatius, together with the apocalypse known as the "Shepherd of Hermas," were read and valued in the early church. They were never "excluded" from the New Testament, for the simple reason that they were never "included" in the first place. It is true that some reading communities accorded some of these books equal or near-equal status with the NT (for example, Codex Sinaiticus contains both Hermas and the Epistle of Barnabas after the books of the New Testament), but this was not the common practice of the majority of churches, and so did not become standard. The author of the preface writes in a misleading, sensationalist tone, suggesting some grand conspiracy theory to suppress these texts. This is a gross misrepresentation of the historical process of canon-formation.
The absence of a table of contents with links to the starts of each text is a serious drawback -- but it's also a free download, so who am I to be picky?
I had to read these separately on the computer before but wanted them all in one book. These are books that didn't get selected to be put into the Bible but they gave me more ideas about the various thinking and radical points of view in the formation of Christianity.
Forbidden books of the original New Testament????? Really???? Most of these books are found in the collection of what is known as Ante-Nicene and Post Nicene Fathers. While it appears his translations are according to slightly different manuscripts the differences appear to me minimal, now the price of this book is better than the cost of the whole of the above collection of Early Church Fathers for those who are looking for early documentation of first through 4th Century writings, this is a positive reason to buy the book, However, the premise that all of these were once included in the Canon of the Bible is stretching the truth a little. You the reader will have to decide as to where the truth most likely falls, I think many were probably read within the Churches during that time frame, but it doesn't mean they were accepted on par with the Apostolic writings which are now Canonized.
